VOLUNTEERING AT THE 'Y'
Kindergarten Pre-school English Program - No teaching experience needed

Brownies/Guides Bauhenia Division

Leaders always needed due to HK turnover. Previous experience is not necessary as training is available. Ideal volunteers are mature adults who like the great outdoors and working with girls ages 6-12 (Brownies), 10-18 (Guides), 14-21 (Rangers) and women aged 65 and over (Golden Guides).
China Coast Community

China Coast Community is a care and attention home for English Speaking elderly persons. Volunteers may assist in the following areas : General visiting of the Elderly residents, one to one visiting of the residents, assist on outings held every two months, assist with regular activities such as Bingo, Afternoon Teas, Tuck shop.
Christian Action
Kwun Tong Road, Kowloon
Volunteers needed to teach arts and crafts to small groups of children age 4-14 in the Kaitak group. Also Cantonese speakers needed to help with new immigrants from Mainland China.
Community Advice Bureau
Volunteers needed to help with telephone service. Help also needed to update information; lots of telephoning involved which can be done at home. Volunteers with computer skills always welcome.
Community Drug Advisory
Volunteers needed to present drug education to students, preferably who have been trained in this field. Also those with computer skills, especially networking desk top publishing, designing training resources etc. People to attend fairs to publicise the work of CDAC.

Domestic Helpers and Migrant Workers Programme Christian Action*
Volunteers required to interview the maids with their immigration and employment problems. Training will be given. People required to escort helpers to the Labour Tribunal as observers and to play a more active role at conciliations meetings. Interpreters are also needed for those who speak Indian, Nepalese or Indonesian
Helpers for Domestic Helpers Limited *
Volunteers required to interview and advise maids with employment and immigration problems, prepare labour claims and accompany clients at conciliation meetings and hearings before the Labour Tribunal and the Minor Employment Claims Adjudication Board. The work is conducted under the supervision of qualified lawyers who will provide training and guidance.

Home for severely handicapped children and adults on Castle Peak Road (near Sheung Shui). Committed volunteers required to help bathe and get children ready for school in the morning at 7.00 a.m. and help and at meal times too. Parking available. Occupational therapists and physiotherapists also required. Regular commitment is essential.

Volunteers needed to tape record English language lecture notes and English recreational books for students. Can be done at home.
HK Society for the Protection of Children
Near Prince Edward MTR
Residential crèche for babies under 2 who are orphaned or whose families are suffering from acute social problems. Volunteers needed to interact and play with an assigned child once a week (mornings or afternoons). Volunteer must be over 18 years old and able to stay for 3 months.
HK Vocational Centre*

Hong Kong Vocational Centre provides opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities to achieve independence through development of their own potential and access to resources within the community. Service users are supported to take increased responsibility for themselves and consequentially, to influence the planning and management of their own lives.
Kely Support Group
Looking for volunteers to help at Kely Carnival fun day (4 times a year), for fund raising activities, administration and assisting with activities.
Make A Wish Foundation
Sponsors local charities. Needs help selling Christmas cards at fairs.
Matilda Child Development Centre
Pre-school for special needs children. Volunteers needed during school year to help with preschool playgroups for children with special needs and able-bodied English speaking children. Mornings and some afternoons required. Help also needed with fundraising and clerical work.
Mothers Choice

Regular help needed with nursery care (also suitable for older teenagers over age of 14 but check first). Men very welcome to help with the babies and small children and to help with maintenance at both homes. Fund raising help needed. Also help with typing and accounts. An orientation meeting is held each Monday at 1pm for new volunteers.

Po Leung Kuk
Cantonese speakers preferable. Government institute which houses, cares for and educates local children up to 21 years of age who cannot be cared for in a normal home situation. Also provides service for the elderly. Volunteers must be 18 years or older, a graduate of secondary school and able to commit once a week and for a 6 month period.
Project Orbis
Project Orbis is a charity dedicated to combating curable blindness. Volunteers are desperately needed by their North Point office to help with various clerical duties.
Riding for the Disabled*
Riding programme for both physically and mentally disabled children and young adults. Help needed most mornings (incl. Saturdays). Friday afternoons and Thursday afternoon assistance also required. Useful to have experience with the disabled and/or horses but NOT ESSENTIAL. Training will be given.
Ronald McDonald House
This is a ‘home-away-from-home' in Shatin and is a haven for families of children undergoing treatment for serious illnesses or injuries at nearby Prince of Wales Hospital. Far from home, they need a place to rest while they remain near their child. So if you can help out by doing some office work, fundraising, house cleaning or work with the families, then please call.
St. Barnabas Society & Home
Provides shelter for street sleepers. Welcomes people willing to share skills in arts & crafts of any kind who would teach at the society, anybody willing to help out with admin in the office and also willing to visit people on the street.
Samaritans
English and Cantonese speaking volunteers required. Regular training sessions. Commitment essential.
Save the Children Fund
Wants volunteers who can be called on when needed to sell Christmas cards, deliver collecting boxes, update mailing list, organise functions, translate, interpret and help with all manner of special knowledge and expertise. Occasional help needed for children’s welfare events organised in conjunction with other charities.

To help out with clerical work in the office and they also require anybody that has skills for example, in massage or is a qualified chiropodist.

Watchdog Early Learning & Development Centre
Pre-school for developmentally delayed children. Volunteers needed to assist special needs teachers in the classrooms. Can also help with Fund raising, Christmas party and Spring carnival.
The Warehouse*

Supervised club for teenagers of all races in Aberdeen, which opened in 1995. Help needed in September to teach Chinese teenagers English. Also need help in the cafe, gym and also planning and co-ordinating activities etc.
Welfare Handicrafts

All year round help needed in shop selling handicrafts made by welfare organisations. Training and long term commitment required.
World Wide Fund for Nature
Clerical assistance required in the office, i.e. typing, entering data on computer, filing etc. A minimum half day per week, on a regular basis.
